DESCRIPTION:My research uses the brain’s navigation system as a window in
 to one of the central problems in neuroscience: how neural populations bui
 ld stable internal models of the world while remaining flexible enough to 
 update when the world changes. Drawing on calcium imaging and population d
 ecoding in the thalamic head direction system\, I show that reorientation 
 is not a simple sensory reset\, but a network-level computation shaped by 
 population gain\, short-term memory for visual landmarks\, and the calibra
 tion of self-motion signals. I then connect these mechanistic principles t
 o hippocampal and entorhinal dysfunction in Alzheimer’s disease models\,
  where grid-cell coding appears especially vulnerable and may underlie som
 e of the earliest navigational deficits. Together\, the work argues that s
 patial circuits provide a powerful framework for understanding population 
 dynamics\, memory-guided behavior\, and circuit failure in Alzheimer’s d
 isease.

DESCRIPTION:Large-scale recordings reveal that behaviorally relevant variab
 les are broadly represented throughout the brain. These findings challenge
  a modular view of the brain and suggest instead that complex behaviors en
 gage a distributed network of brain regions. Yet\, a central question rema
 ins: does complex behavior rely on specialized but broadcast computations\
 , or does it emerge from genuinely distributed processing? Both possibilit
 ies are compatible with distributed representations\, but have different m
 echanistic origins.\n\nHere\, we analyzed population activity across seven
  cortical regions during context-dependent decision-making and found that\
 , although task variables were broadly encoded across areas\, their repres
 entational geometry differed systematically between regions. Sensory areas
  preferentially encoded task-relevant stimuli in context-invariant formats
 \, whereas frontal and parietal regions exhibited more context-dependent a
 nd choice-related dynamics. To investigate how information flows across re
 gions\, we trained multi-area low-rank recurrent neural networks to reprod
 uce the recorded population activity. The models captured region-specific 
 geometries and revealed that cross-regional interactions were lower-dimens
 ional than within-region dynamics in sensory\, but not frontal regions. An
 alyses of cross-regional information flow revealed a modular organization 
 of computation across regions: sensory areas (V4/MT) primarily propagated 
 color and motion information\, whereas PFC transformed cue-related sensory
  inputs into an abstract representation of context. In turn\, LIP integrat
 ed these distributed signals to compute context-dependent choice signals\,
  which could then be read out by FEF to support motor output. Overall\, ou
 r findings are consistent with a distributed architecture in which task va
 riables are computed locally and then broadcast across regions\, a mechani
 sm that we further supported with in silico perturbations.
